Day 6: Free time in San Salvador

Updated: Mar 19, 2023

Wednesday morning was our only morning off of the trip! The majority of the students used this time to catch up on sleep and enjoy the nice breeze coming into the dorms from a midnight storm. After sleeping in, some students spent their free time between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM exploring the beach directly across from the Gerace Research Center (GRC). The weather was sunny with an occasional breeze allowing a nice time to read a book/work on some in-field assignments. Some other people used their morning to explore some of the research areas at GRC. The GRC has an iguana exhibit that has iguanas of the genus Cyclura, which are often referred to as Rock iguanas. Rock iguanas are the largest native land vertebrates in the Caribbean. In the Bahamas, all seven taxa of Bahamian iguanas are protected in the Bahamas under the Wild Animal Protection Act of 1968. The GRC also has a water table (see picture below), that one of the student groups visiting is using to construct coral tables that they are setting out in French Bay for coral reef rehabilitation. Overall, everyone enjoyed their morning off in different ways either expanding on the knowledge we have learned in class so far, or exploring new parts of the island that we haven’t taken the time to see!
