In the afternoon today we snorkeled where Pigeon Creek meets the Atlantic Ocean. In spite of its name, Pigeon Creek does not resemble a typical creek and looks more like a lake. It is a tidal inlet filled with beautiful, clear ocean water; standing in contrast to neighboring bodies of water such as Storr’s Lake which is cloudy and brown. We timed our trip so that we left while the tide was going out which meant that a current carried us out into the ocean. This made for a very easy snorkel. While in the current, we saw lots of seagrass along with some anemones and starfish. In the ocean by Snow Bay we were lucky enough to find an octopus in its burrow. Near its burrow, it had left shells from creatures it ate, 2 of which were great examples of conches which Sammy and Molly collected. Rex also found a lionfish. Once we were back on land in Snow Bay, we were able to find many shells (gastropods, bivalves, and conches) as well as remains of sea urchins and red algae. Our long drive back to the research center was smooth and peaceful thanks to Jill’s driving and Liz’s navigation. Overall it was a very busy and rewarding day which left most of us unable to do anything but sleep afterwards.
