Day 5 morning: Exploring Cockburn Town

Updated: Mar 18

Hey everyone! This morning, we visited Cockburn Town, which is the main town in San Salvador. It is a lovely, quaint place with colorful buildings, a few churches, and a few grocery shops. We also visited a cemetery, and some of the headstones were decorated with conch shells, which I felt was unique to a coastal town like Cockburn. The church, which had all of its doors wide open for visitors, had a beautiful stained glass window and was a very peaceful place for us to sit and take a moment away from all the activity we’ve been doing for the last few days while drinking our Goombay punch.

After that, we did more geology things! At Barker’s Point, we saw a very cool paleosol feature: a carbonate formation of where a tree had once been. Carbonate deposits were built up around the roots and lower trunk of the tree, and long after the tree decomposed, the carbonate structure around it was left behind. Very cool! And that concludes our morning.
